The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health’s Office of Mine Safety and Health Research (OMSHR) is seeking an individual for a full-time position as the Director, Division of Mining Science and Technology (DMST).

NIOSH’s OMSHR provides national and international leadership in the prevention of work-related illness, injury, and fatalities of mine workers through research and prevention activities.  Some of the world’s most respected experts are employed at OMSHR’s world class facilities located in Pittsburgh, PA and Spokane, WA.  OMSHR is one of the most technologically advanced mining health and safety research laboratories in the world.  

As a senior member of the OMSHR management team, the Director, DMST: (1) studies global technology developments in areas of potential benefit to mining safety and health; (2) devises research or evaluation protocols to assess the efficacy of candidate technologies; (3) develops and implements work plans to adapt promising technologies for a mining application; (4) leads research-to-practice activities to facilitate adoption of key safety and health technologies; (5) utilizes contracts and grants to facilitate the goals of the MINER Act; (6) coordinates with the Division of Mining Research Operations for effective utilization of laboratory and human resources to accomplish the mission of the Office of Mine Safety and Health Research; (7) provides vision and leadership, and coordinates the processes to ensure an environment thriving with scientific excellence, integrity, and innovation; (8) provides for the surveillance, health communications, and computations support needs of the Office of Mine Safety and Health. Total staff of DMST ranges from 30-35 with all of OMSHR staff ranging from 220-250.   


  • Doctorate in any field of engineering or science utilized in the mining program.
  • Highly interactive interpersonal skills for team work and effective communication.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills including a track record of publications.
  • Demonstrated ability to work equally well independently and as part of a larger team.
  • Demonstrated leadership abilities.
  • Must be a U.S. Citizen or have ability to obtain a Green Card.

  The OMSHR is headquartered in Pittsburgh, PA and has research facilities in both Pittsburgh and Spokane, WA. The 180-acre Pittsburgh campus includes a cafeteria, credit union, day care center, fitness facility, and free parking all located on site.
